The two Greek Muslims who were arrested last December on the island were unanimously found guilty of espionage by the Mixed Jury Court of Rhodes.
The 36-year-old general secretary of the Turkish consulate in Rhodes and the 53-year-old ship cook were accused of supporting the enemy’s military force, violating state secrets and espionage.
The court, with its unanimous decision, found them guilty only for the 3rd category, espionage (to a degree of felony) jointly and continuously, and acquitted them of the other two offenses that burdened them.
Ankara’s reaction was immediate, with the Turkish Foreign Ministry issuing a statement condemning the decision of the Greek Justice.
“We condemn the heavy sentence of 5 years of imprisonment announced by the Mixed Jury Court of Rhodes after a three-day hearing process that began on December 13, 2021, and was imposed on the contracted staff of the Turkish Consulate General in Rhodes on the charge of so-called , reports the Turkish Foreign Ministry.
Greek diplomatic sources point out the inviolability of Greek justice.
“Regarding yesterday’s announcement by the Turkish Foreign Ministry, it is underlined that the Greek Justice is independent and an attempt can not be accepted to turn an issue of internal legal order into an international issue,” diplomatic sources said.
The two Greeks are said to have committed the offenses attributed to them from August to November 2020.
