The issue of the arms embargo on Turkey was raised at the Council of the Party of European Socialists by the president of the Movement for Change, Nikos Androulakis, as he stated upon his arrival.
Mr. Androulakis stressed that “no European state can continue to equip Turkey, as unfortunately Spain did recently, extending an earlier agreement of the Rajoy government again with Mr. Erdogan.” At the same time, he underlined that “today the European Socialists also honor the memory of our president, Fofis Gennimata, who left so early and unjustly”.
Specifically, Mr. Androulakis stated:
“After the political world of our country, today the European Socialists also honor the memory of our president, Fofis Gennimata, who left us so early and unjustly.
As for my position, I will again raise the issue of an arms embargo on Turkey. We can not talk about a common defense and security policy of the European Union and there are states that equip an international unrest, which violates the sovereign rights of neighboring countries, such as Greece and Cyprus and also creates too many problems from the South Caucasus to Middle East. So I think we need to go back to my proposal, which was voted in favor by the European Parliament in the arms trade package to third countries, that no European country can continue to equip Turkey, as unfortunately Spain did recently, extending an earlier agreement. Rajoy government again with Mr. Erdogan. This is unacceptable and must stop, because it challenges the Greek people. “
