The best preparation and “fermentation” ahead of the next European Council will take place in Athens today and tomorrow on the occasion of the informal meeting of the European People’s Party. In mid-December the leaders of the E.U. will be called upon to make his final decisions on the energy crisis with the imposition of a cap on natural gas continues to be problematic. It is important that present in Athens will be the president of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metzola. It is recalled that on the 13th of the month, the energy ministers are invited to manage to reconcile the north and the south and to reach the correct and fairest decision so that the prices of natural gas can be restrained. The northern countries are only interested in sufficiency, while the southern ones are facing the nightmare of big price hikes.

With regard to the EPP meeting, seven heads of state and a total of 20 party presidents are expected to open the debate on the upcoming European elections of 2024 with the aim of coordinating their actions to strengthen the European center-right. The EPP Leaders Retreat is a two-day brainstorming event organized on his initiative Manfred Weber and the general secretary of the EPP Thanasis Bakolas. In addition to Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the president of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, the prime ministers of Croatia, Andrej Plenkovic, of Slovakia, Edward Heger, the prime minister of Lithuania, Igrinda Simonite, and the Chancellor of Austria, Karl Neuhammer, will be present.

The process will be closed, as the aim is to hold a deep political debate that will allow the EPP leadership to set the agenda and priorities for the upcoming electoral contests in important countries such as Greece, Spain, Poland, Finland and Cyprus next February. For ELP the main issue is to strengthen their forces in the European Council. For this reason, the Polish Doland Tusk and the Spanish Alberto Nunez Feijo will be in Athens. The period is anyway critical with the groups of the European Parliament readjusting their strategies. His term also ends in 2024 Charles Michel in the position of the president of the European Council and discussions have begun, albeit informally, about his successor.

With these data, the further strengthening of the European People’s Party against the Social Democrats and the Left in the next period is considered imperative. All possible openings are weighed. Among them is the rapprochement desired by the new Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, with the European center-right. The EPP leadership proclaims that the party’s position is clear and provides for clear rules that apply to everyone: respect for the Rule of Law, support for Ukraine without asterisks and a genuine pro-European stance.
