Response of the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the reaction of the transitional government of Libya through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the energy research south of Crete

Greece exercises its sovereign rights with full respect for international law and the law of the sea, in contrast to those who conclude illegal and non-existent memoranda, responds to today’s announcement by the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs on energy research south of Crete, the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Alexander Papaioannou.

In particular, responding to a journalist’s question about today’s announcement by the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Papaioannou pointed out the following:

“Unlike those who conclude illegal and non-existent “memorandums” that ignore and circumvent basic rules of International Law and the Law of the Sea, Greece exercises its sovereign rights with full respect for International Law and the Law of the Sea.

Something that he has also done in the EEZ demarcations with Egypt and Italy.

The obligation of the transitional government of Libya is to immediately lead the country to elections.

We look forward to working in a spirit of honesty and mutual respect and always within the framework of the rules of International Law and the Law of the Sea with an elected government of Libya, which will have the legitimacy and competence to enter into valid International Agreements, in accordance with the Road Map of the 2020 Forum for Political Dialogue in Libya (LPDF).
