With a total budget of €6.6 billion for the period 2021-27, MSCA actions support researchers from all over the world, at all stages of their careers and in all scientific disciplines

Today the Commission announced new calls for proposals to support the training, skills and career development of researchers under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), the EU’s flagship funding program under the Horizon Europe Framework Programme. for doctoral education and postdoctoral training. With a total budget of €6.6 billion for the period 2021-27, MSCA actions support researchers from all over the world, at all stages of their careers and in all scientific disciplines. They also benefit institutions by supporting excellent PhD/postdoctoral programs and collaborative research and innovation projects, enhancing their global appeal and visibility, and fostering collaboration beyond academia, including with large companies and SMEs.

The MSCA actions will provide over €856 million in 2023 and €902 million in 2024 to cover the five main actions of the work programme:

-MSCA doctoral networks — implementation of programs to train PhD candidates in academia and other sectors, including industry and business. The 2023 and 2024 calls for proposals, with a budget of €434.8 and €451.2 million respectively, will open in May and close in November each year.

MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships — enhancing the creative and innovative potential of PhD researchers who wish to acquire new skills through advanced training and international, interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral mobility. Funding will be available to researchers who are ready to engage in cutting-edge research and innovation projects in Europe and worldwide, including in the non-academic sector. The 2023 and 2024 calls for proposals, with a budget of €260.5 and €270.8 million respectively, will open in April and close in September each year.

-MSCA personnel exchanges — development of international, cross-sectoral and interdisciplinary sustainable cooperation in the field of research and innovation through personnel exchanges. The program contributes to the transformation of ideas into innovative products, services or processes. The 2023 and 2024 calls for proposals, with a budget of €78.5 and €81.2 million respectively, will open in October and close in late February or early March each year.

-MSCA COFUND — co-finances new or existing PhD programs and post-doctoral fellowship programs in EU Member States or Horizon Europe associated countries with the aim of disseminating the best practices of MSCA actions. This includes international, interdisciplinary and interdisciplinary research training, as well as international and interdisciplinary mobility of researchers at all stages of their careers. The 2023 and 2024 calls for proposals, with a budget of €96.6 and €99.3 million respectively, will open in October and close in February each year.

– MSCA and citizens — brings research closer to students, families and the general public, notably through the ‘European Night of the Researcher’ event and the ‘Researchers in Schools’ initiative. The action raises awareness of the impact of researchers’ work on citizens’ lives, society and the economy and enhances public recognition of science and research. It also aims to increase young people’s interest in careers in research and science. The 2023 call for proposals, with a budget of €15.4 million, covers the 2024 and 2025 editions of the European Researcher’s Evening and will start on 20 June with a deadline of 25 October 2023.

As part of the new work programme, MSCA actions will also fund a policy feedback initiative to strengthen the thematic links between MSCA projects, increase the visibility of their contribution to key EU policy priorities and gather feedback from stakeholders on ways to maximize the impact of the programme.

The calls for proposals follow the approval of the Horizon Europe work program for the period 2023-24.

Record

The programme, launched in 1990 and renamed Marie Curie Actions in 1996, contributes to research excellence by stimulating employment, growth and investment, equipping researchers with new knowledge and skills and providing them with international and cross-sectoral experience to cover tomorrow’s leading research positions. They have a structural impact on higher education institutions and other entities beyond academia, spreading excellence widely and setting standards for high-quality education and professional training of researchers across the European Research Area (ERA) and globally.

Since 2014 the program has supported more than 66,200 researchers from Europe and beyond, including 25,000 PhD candidates. It also funded 1,180 international PhD programs and strengthened links between academia and industry, involving more than 5,100 companies and 2,650 SMEs. During the same period, more than 8,700 organizations from more than 130 countries participated in MSCA actions.
