The corruption scandal that broke out in the heart of the European capital, in which the name of the Greek MEP Eva Kaili, who was brought in for questioning on charges of bribery and bribery, is taking on explosive proportions amid the World Cup in Qatar.
The bringing in of Ms. Kaili and four other people took place in the context of an investigation carried out yesterday in Brussels by the Anti-Corruption Bureau, for a case of corruption and financing by Qatari officials, within the European Parliament.
The Belgian authorities carried out on Friday, December 9, at least 17 searches in various Brussels municipalities, including the home of Mrs. Eva Kaili.
According to information from the Belgian newspaper L’EchoMrs. Kaili spent the night in detention, as “bags of banknotes” were found in her home.
The same newspaper reports that Mrs. Kaili he was arrested on his own, which is the only possible way to defeat parliamentary immunity. The investigators also arrested the father of Mr. Kailis, who tried to escape with a suitcase full of banknotes.
According to the newspaper Le SoirMs. Kaili, like the other four arrested who were brought to a hearing yesterday, will be brought before a competent Judge within 48 hours, who will decide on possible arrest warrants.
All are presumed innocent.
The Belgian federal prosecutor’s office has not confirmed the names of those arrested, but emphasizes that they are “personalities with strategic positions.”
According to information from APE-MBE, the other four arrested are the partner of Mrs. Kaili, Francesco Giorgiwho was formerly an associate of the also arrested former Socialist MEP (2004-2019), Pier Antonio Pancheri.
Also arrested was the newly appointed general secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), Luca Vincentiniwho for 11 years was the head of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC).

It has also become known that the Belgian authorities have searched the homes and offices of associates of two Belgian MEPs, Marie Alena, a former minister of Belgium and Marc Tarabella, who also belong to the Socialist group of the European Parliament. The authorities seized computers and sealed the offices of their assistants.
Finally, it is noted that the announcement of the federal prosecutor’s office states that at the center of the Belgian authorities’ investigation are the actions of Qatar, where the FIFA World Cup is currently being held, which is suspected of having “influenced economic and political decisions of the European Parliament, paying significant sums of money or offering significant gifts”.
