On the new pedestrian street in front of “Floga” the Christmas celebration for the children of the club in the presence of Bakoyannis

The dangerous road was now turned into a safe pedestrian street and play area for children – Bakoyannis: “It was not just a pre-election promise – It was our duty and an act of love and respect towards the difficult work of Flogas”

In the new, beautiful pedestrian street of Aigiou Street in Goudi, the construction of which was – for many years – a request of the Association of Parents of Children with Neoplastic Disease “Floga”, the scene of a bright Christmas event was set up yesterday afternoon, in which the protagonists were the the children of Flame themselves and their families.

Just a few days after the completion of the project, which was a personal commitment of the Mayor of Athens, Costas Bakoyannis, in order to solve the chronic issue of the safe movement of children and their parents hosted in the Association’s hostels on Aigiou Street, the members of Flogas organized a special event with Mr. Bakoyannis as the guest of honor.

The Mayor of Athens, together with the children, lit up the tall Christmas tree, which had been set up on the pedestrian street, while the festive atmosphere was completed by music, balloons and games which were offered to all the children by the Directorate of Social Solidarity of the Municipality of Athens and the Deputy Mayor, Katerina Gagaki.

The children of Flogas and their parents all found themselves together on the brand new, modern pedestrian path, which now safely connects all the Association’s facilities, after the response of the municipal authority to the request of the Association’s administration to pedestrianize the point, which – until recently – it was a dangerous passage for children and parents.

“Tonight, it is a very beautiful moment for all of us in the Municipality of Athens, but especially for the children of Flogas and their families who are accommodated in the hostels. Our Christmas wishes, this year, are not limited to a few lines in a card, but become a true act of love and support. This sidewalk was a moral commitment that we undertook to implement as a minimal contribution to the difficult work of the people of the Association who struggle every day to ensure the best conditions for the hosted children with cancer and their parents.

The unimpeded and above all safe access of the children of Flogas to the hostels is now a fact and we are happy that, tonight, we see many faces shining with joy. Our only wish now is health for everyone”, the Mayor of Athens, Costas Bakoyannis, emphasized in his statement.

“This project did not need money to be done. This project needed a soul,” said the president of Flogas, Mrs. Maria Tryfonidis, to add: “For many years we tried, we begged one, the other, again and again, we told them that here we have children who have the right to go out a little. These children are suffering. ….I know that this whole process went through many difficulties and I thank him” concluded Mrs. Tryfonidou, visibly moved.

What does the pedestrian project include?

After the interventions – carried out by the technical department of the Municipality of Athens, under the supervision of the Deputy Mayor of Urban and Building Infrastructures, Vassilis Axiotis, the surface of Aigiou Street was paved with new, environmentally friendly materials, while benches built with flower beds of flowering plants. In addition, low planting was increased and new, flowering trees were planted.

With the new project, the common area – except for the emergency lane – can now host outdoor games such as chess, tic-tac-toe, checkers, maze, etc. Finally, at the point, the existing lighting was also strengthened with the installation of six LED type lights.
