The vice-president of the European Commission responded directly to a question he received about whether he has received gifts from Qatar

Answers to what is heard around his name and his possible involvement in QatarGate from various publications, the vice president of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas, gave today.

“This is the European Commission: we don’t improvise here,” he said. “Thank God I tweeted,” he added. “You can imagine the kind of criticism I would have received if I hadn’t tweeted everything I did everything I said in broad daylight.”

It is recalled that Margaritis Schinas, in a tweet he had made during his visit to Qatar last November, referred to Qatar’s “significant and tangible progress in labor reform”, requesting that these reforms be maintained. Meanwhile, he had tweeted enthusiastically when he represented the EU at the opening ceremony of the World Cup last month.

The Greek commissioner went on to say that it was necessary to represent Europe at the World Cup, given its international importance and symbolic role after the pandemic.

“Europe could not be missing the occasion,” he said.

Asked directly if he had ever received gifts from Qatar, Mr Schinas responded by saying: “Yes, I have received a soccer ball and a box of chocolates,” he said. “I think I left them both with the driver who dropped me off at the field.”
