The wiretapping is an “unprecedented democratic deviation”, said Mr Tsipras and accused the government of “targeting those who bring it up” and those from the opposition who “shout that they are not tolerated”.
The opinion that although the problems of everyday life are the ones that mainly concern the world, citizens are watching what is happening with the rule of law and democracy and “turn their eyes away in disgust”, the president of SYRIZA-PS, Alexis Tsipras, expressed in an interview which he granted to STAR of Central Greece as part of his current tour to Lamia.
As he repeated, referring to the words of the former prime ministers of the ND faction, Costas Karamanlis and Antonis Samaras, the wiretapping is an “unprecedented democratic diversion” and accused the government of “targeting those who highlight them” and those from the opposition “shout that they are not tolerable”.
“If in the name of any crisis we accept the shrinking of democracy, it is not far to put democracy on the sidelines,” said Al Tsipras, calling on all “democratic citizens of all parties” to join their voices and say ” That’s enough”.
He also emphasized that “in any liberal European democracy” if such revelations were made, “the government would not be able to stand for a minute” – only in “authoritarian countries” such as Qatar.
Besides, when asked to comment on the role of surveillance in cases like that of Eva Kaili, the president of SYRIZA-PS clarified that there is a Constitution and laws that define how surveillance should be carried out on the basis of institutional guarantees.
“Here we had heaps of illegalities on the part of those who put half the political system under surveillance, because there was obviously no national reason, no suspicion that criminal acts would be committed”, he noted and made a specific reference to Mr. Androulakis that “we were never told the national discourse”.
He said this surveillance was proven before they started “burning evidence” and hurling “threats and prison terms, shaking privacy.”
