Mitsotakis from the Summit: We are close to a cap on natural gas – Let’s send a “signal” to the markets

Regardless of the European decisions, the government continues to take support measures for households and businesses – 900 million were disbursed in this direction in December alone, K. Mitsotakis pointed out

Europe is close to imposing a ceiling on the price of natural gas, the Prime Minister pointed out Kyriakos Mitsotakis coming to the Summit.

“It is absolutely necessary that Europe finally sends a clear “signal” to the markets that he is not going to allow the instrumentalization of natural gas by Russia,” the prime minister pointed out.

“Our argumentation is now known in all member states and I think that in one way or another we will find the necessary majorities in order to move in this direction,” he emphasized.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis reminded, however, that in any case – and regardless of the European decisions – the Greek Governmentstill taking all measures in order to support Greek households and Greek businesses and only in December 900 million euros will be disbursed from the state budget to support households with low incomes, but also our fellow citizens who are entitled to a support allowance for heating oil purchases

The statements of Kyriakos Mitsotakis in detail

“At the last European Council of the year we will return to the question of the cost of energy, and I hope that after many months of consultation we will be able to finalize our decisions either today, or at the latest next Monday, in the Council of Ministers.

We are close to being able to impose a ceiling on the price of natural gas. Our argumentation is now known in all member states and I believe that one way or another we will find the necessary majorities in order to move in this direction.

It is absolutely necessary that Europe finally sends a clear “signal” to the markets that it is not going to allow the instrumentalization of natural gas by Russia. We need to support our consumers, our businesses, our households today in order to face this wave of precision, a “product” of Russia’s war and unjust invasion of Ukraine.

In any case – and regardless of the European decisions – the Greek Government continues to take all measures to support Greek households and Greek businesses. I want to remind you that in the month of December alone, 900 million euros will be disbursed from the state budget to support households with low incomes, as well as our fellow citizens who are entitled to a support allowance for heating oil purchases.

And of course this, combined with a number of other initiatives – such as the “Household Basket”, which now also has a Christmas dimension – proves that the government is doing everything it can, trying to limit the effects of imported precision. In this direction we will continue to move, leaving behind the inarticulate cries of the opposition and supporting, as far as possible, households and businesses.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis: This is an issue we have been discussing for months in the European Council. I had hoped that by now we would have been able to reach an agreement at the level of our Ministers. Unfortunately, the issue has come back to us, but I am optimistic that if not today then next Monday at the latest – when our Ministers meet again – we will have a final decision.

It is necessary to send a clear “signal” to the markets, but also to Russia, that we will not accept the instrumentalization of natural gas at the expense of our citizens and businesses.”
