What did the president of SYRIZA say at the meeting of the Party of Eurosocialists
In the context of his participation in the meeting of the Party of Eurosocialists, which focused on the Qatargate scandal, the impeachment of Eva Kaili and the defense of the rule of law in the member states, the President of SYRIZA-PS, Alexis Tsipras, emphasized, among other things, that he must fight for the restoration of justice because Mitsotakis policies are rapidly widening inequalities.
At the same time, regarding Qatargate, he mentioned that the Belgian judiciary reacted quickly, unlike the Greek one, to the wiretapping scandal.
Mr. Tsipras pointed out in detail, among other things:
“The next political battle for the progressive forces, with increased chances for a progressive government, will be in a few months in Greece, where the conditions for political change exist.
We want your support in this effort, as it will be a battle not only for the restoration of social justice but justice in general in my country, where in recent years the policies of the right-wing Mitsotakis government have rapidly widened inequalities.
The upcoming election will be of particular importance as very important values are at stake in Greece, regarding democracy and the European rule of law, as well as the fight against corruption and inequalities.
Unfortunately, again today Greece is at the center of international interest for the wrong reasons:
An unimaginable wiretapping scandal by the Mitsotakis Government that is also being investigated by European institutions, as it concerns monitoring not only of the President of PASOK, but dozens of politicians, journalists, and even the heads of the armed forces.
And an unprecedented European scandal in the context of which European officials are being investigated, but in which the Greek former vice-president of the European Parliament is the protagonist. An MEP who, despite belonging to the group of socialists cooperated more closely with the EPP, firmly supported the Mitsotakis government, and maintained a negative attitude even in the investigation of the wiretapping scandal by the competent committee of the European Parliament in which she participated, while she was strongly opposed to any thought of cooperation of the progressive forces in Greece, should there be no prospect of a change of government.
It is very important that the Belgian judiciary reacted quickly to Qatargate, in contrast to the reaction of the Greek judiciary to the wiretapping scandal.
It is important that she was removed from the position of vice-president and of course deleted from both PASOK and the group of socialists in the European Parliament.
The problem, however, beyond corruption, has two very essential dimensions that we must focus on:
Firstly, Europe cannot act with double standards at the diplomatic level towards countries that do not respect human rights. It cannot in other countries properly support the protection of human rights and turn a blind eye in rich countries like Qatar. And European officials to welcome “progress in labor rights” when 6,500 workers have died to build World Cup stadiums. This is the great shame of Europe. And of course the revelations of corruption simply explain this shame.
Secondly, that we all know that Brussels is the capital of lobbying. Don’t do what we don’t understand. The issue is how we will ensure that there will be institutional control sections that will prevent such sad phenomena of corruption.
The proposals that have been submitted to, among other things, prohibit MEPs from lobbying after they leave the European Parliament and to institute an independent authority to control the movable and immovable property of European officials, are in a positive direction.”
