Kalafatis to SKAI: “We seek development for the place with the benefits down to the last euro going to society”

“We are exhausting the fiscal margins in order to cover the needs of our most vulnerable fellow citizens,” Stavros Kalafatis pointed out indicatively in an interview he granted to Giorgos Autias

“What we seek is for it to exist development for the place and the benefits – even the last euro – go to society. Throughout the last three years – not only in the last year – there is an ongoing effort” said the Deputy Minister of Interior (Macedonia – Thrace) Stavros Kalafatis to SKAI and the journalist Giorgos Autias, commenting on the government’s social measures in the context of the new state budget.

Mr. Kalafatis also mentioned that the government had to deal with many crises such as the pandemic and punctuality and at the same time progress the reform project. “More than 250 bills of a reform nature with a strong social and development footprint were passed throughout this period” he noted

He added: “In life as in politics, we are what we do and not what we say. This government is what it does. He made reductions in taxes and in insurance contributions that breathed life into society. We have exhausted and are exhausting the fiscal margins in order to strengthen and cover the needs of our most vulnerable fellow citizens with targeted interventions.

Referring to the “Thessaloniki 2030” agenda, the Deputy Minister of Interior pointed out that: “This is a master plan for Thessaloniki. It was an order given by the prime minister. It is essentially one consolidated plan with a total budget of 9.3 billion euros, which aims at the end of 2030 for Thessaloniki to play a dominant role in the wider region. There are 30+ public and private projects with a specific schedule. Some of them have been done, some are in progress, some are in planning. We work every day to solve citizens’ problems. This will be assessed by the citizens themselves when the time comes. As a Government, we have been focusing all this time on the everyday life of the citizens. And the interventions of the Prime Minister always move at this level”.

Commenting on the news regarding the issue of Ms. Kailis and Ms. Spyrakis, Mr. Kalafatis pointed out that “there should be clear separation between the two cases, so that there is no confusion. This should be clean. In the case of Mrs. Kaili, I believe that what causes the greatest damage is that the relationship of trust between citizens and the political system is affected. Something that is necessary. Because if there is not a reliable and honest relationship between the political system – whether it is called the European Parliament or the Greek Parliament – then vital space is left for populist and fringe forces to enter and create problems in the life of the country. The second part is the question of shielding the institutions in such a way that even the natural person who is susceptible cannot attempt it”.

“We feel that in these three years, led by the prime minister, so many things are being done and so many breaths are being given to Greek society, so much is being done major projects, reforms are progressing that give “air” to the country’s economy and there are some such incidents that essentially “scratch” an image and do injustice to the efforts of the Prime Minister who tries day and night and brings significant results. And this is recognized in all international forums and by international organizations.”
