“The new Museum embodies a new dynamic approach to its relationship with the archaeological site” noted Mr. Mitsotakis.
The new Polycentric Museum of Goats in Vergina is an “important contribution to the development of world cultural heritage” and goes beyond the borders not only of Imathia, but also of the whole of Greece, emphasized Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis who inaugurated the new Museum this morning.
“The new Museum embodies a new dynamic approach to its relationship with the archaeological site” noted Mr. Mitsotakis.
This is because, as according to the data presented, it is a multiform museum space, which integrates and unites the new central building with the entire archaeological site of Aige (Vergina), which includes Philip’s Palace, the burial cluster of the Temenids, as well as the Museum of the Royal Tombs.
The new Museum, the central museum building, was designed to become the symbolic gateway to the archaeological site and to the history of the Aigai, to the history and culture of the Macedonians, but also to the Hellenistic World, as this is where the physical headquarters of the Digital Museum will be hosted “Alexander the Great, from the Goats to the Ecumene”.
The new Museum, in addition to the introductory exhibit “a window into the world of Alexander the Great”, hosts five exhibitions:
1. The architectural exhibition with the central exhibit the reorganized part of the palace,
2. The sculpture exhibition,
3. The central exhibition “Goat memory”,
4. The periodic exhibition “Ecumenical Antidoron” held in collaboration with the Numismatic Museum and the collector Theodoros Aravanis.
5. The art exhibition “Memory Matter” with works by the painter Christos Bokorou created especially for the presentation in the museum of the Goats.
The works were carried out by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Imathia with funding from the budget of the Ministry of Culture and Sports and from the PEP of Central Macedonia.
The “VERGINA MULTICENTRAL MUSEUM-CENTRAL MUSEUM BUILDING” project with a total integration budget of 18,154,190 Euros was implemented in two phases by the Directorate of Studies and Works of Museums and Cultural Buildings and the Imathia Antiquities Ephorate.
At the end of his speech, the Prime Minister referred to the statement made by Konstantinos Karamanlis in 1978, when he visited the archaeological site of Vergina together with Manolis Andronikos, and had pointed out the national importance of archaeological discoveries in the area.
Mr. Mitsotakis said that today both Konstantinos Karamanlis and Manolis Andronikos would be proud of this new Museum that is being inaugurated.
He thanked everyone who helped in its creation and made a special mention of archaeologist Angeliki Kottaridis who he said dedicated her life to this cause.
