The belief that it will be the New Democracy government that will deliver his work fly over on the Thessaloniki ring roadwhich is expected to be completed in four years from today (i.e. at the end of 2026), the Prime Minister expressed at noon, from Thessaloniki, Kyriakos Mitsotakisduring the contract signing ceremony for the road project, budget of 373.2 million euros.
Watch the contract signing event:
“This project was designed, studied, contracted and will start to be built by the government of the ND and I believe that the government of the ND is the one that will deliver it” underlined Mr. Mitsotakis, who characterized the fly over as an innovative project by many points of view, not only technically, but also financially, as it is the first road of this extent, which is done with a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) and uses the tool of availability payments.
The prime minister also reminded that after the completion of its construction and for 26 years, the contractor will undertake the maintenance of the new road, which will relieve traffic and make safer a road artery that was saturated almost from the moment it was designed.
He also asked the scheme of contracting companies (AVAX-Mytileneos) to deliver the fly over earlier than the contractual delivery time, which he said despite the technical challenges of the project, he has no doubt that they will succeed.
The prime minister also referred to the Thessaloniki Metro, speaking of the government’s struggle with vested interests and perceptions, “who did not want the project to be built the way it was built”, while he reiterated that at the end of 2023-beginning of 2024 the city will have “and Metro and ancient”.
Regarding the Thessaloniki Urban Transport Organization (OASTH), he said that its current upgraded status has nothing to do with the one received in 2019 by the current government.
