Dendias: “Greece and Australia share common principles and values”

The Foreign Minister speaking to the expatriates of Australia said that although the two countries are so far from each other, in terms of geography, in reality they are so close, if we consider that they share common principles and values

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, sent a message to the expatriates of Australia, arguing that “Greece and Australia are two countries so far from each other, in terms of geography, and yet, so close, if we think that they share common principles and values”.

According to Mr. Dendias, “defense of democracy and human rights, respect for the sovereign rights of each country, observance of International Law and the International Law of the Sea and UNCLOS, adherence to the peaceful resolution of disputes, support of the Charter of the United Nations are some of the values on which our constructive cooperation is founded.

At the same time, the two countries are connected by strong historical ties, which were forged in common struggles for democracy and freedom, during the First and Second World Wars. In addition, they have developed meaningful and productive cooperation in the framework of international organizations, as well as multifaceted bilateral relations with broad perspectives, as I had the opportunity and honor to discuss in detail, last December, with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Australia, Marise Payne, during the official her visit to Greece.

An important aspect of bilateral relations, with a decisive contribution to mutual understanding, creative interaction, cordial friendship and the timeless strengthening of the relations between Greece and Australia, is the prosperous and dynamic Greek community in Australia, which is active and develops its rich work in almost all the cities of the country.

With the twin vision of creation, our expatriates, now an integral element of Australian society and a fruitful contribution to the progress and prosperity of Australia, make us proud with their presence and work in the country that welcomed them when they immigrated from Greece, and it became their second home.

With their active action and the systematic promotion and support of Greece’s positions, our expatriates become “ambassadors” of our country and contribute to the further strengthening of our already strong ties of friendship and cooperation with Australia”
