At least 60 difficult days await the parties in the Parliament, as the forces that got the precious “ticket” in July 2019 wish to win the last impressions just before the polls are set. In the Plenary, in the Committees, in the Parliamentary Audit and in the special meetings, the disputes are many and the differences are great. The government-opposition conflict is expected to peak in January, as the Conference of Presidents will deal with the renewal of the term of office of members of the Communications Privacy Assurance Authority and the National Broadcasting Council. In the Institutions and Transparency Committee, the issue of monitoring is expected to dominate, with opposition to ask for new explanations and information mainly regarding the accounts of the companies allegedly related to the wiretapping.
The leaders of the opposition parties, and in particular Alexis Tsipras, are expected to increase their appearances in Parliament, highlighting current issues or reacting to the new legislation that the majority plans to bring. The possibility that SYRIZA had been discussed table a motion of no confidence against the government, however, Alexis Tsipras does not seem to want to give the government a “gift” of its extra mobilization, since the New Democracy already received a vote of confidence through the budget. In the last turn before the elections such a move is not considered appropriate except in exceptional cases. For the current month there is no scheduled conflict between Mitsotakis and Tsipras in the Parliament. It is not excluded, of course, that the leader of the official opposition will pursue this by submitting a new question during the prime minister’s time. Sources from Koumoundourou leave all possibilities open.
In the government camp they are already talking for the 398 pieces of legislation which the government brought to the Plenary in the last three years. The planning includes the passing of many more bills that will enter the Committees and the Plenary by 17 ministries. The prime minister has demanded that portfolio heads not put down their pencils until the election. The Ministry of Finance is planning arrangements for occupied public properties and the establishment of a private debt monitoring register. From the Ministry of the Interior, the new legislation concerns multi-level governance, and from the Ministry of Justice, the new framework from where you are concerned. The Ministry of Education is preparing a bill regarding new criteria for selecting teachers and the Ministry of Health, among other regulations, for day care units, as well as unemployment support programs.
An area of conflict may be the issue of the vote of expatriates and the possibility of predicting a connection between the number of deputies elected by Greeks abroad and the number of those who will vote. However, SYRIZA and PASOK, which together number 110 MPs, have already declared that they will not support such an initiative (a 2/3 majority is required) and blame Maximou for the very small number of registrations in the electoral rolls of the emigrants.
The scenarios that the prime minister wants to choose on the first Sundays of April as prevailing dates for appealing to the polls, they assume the dissolution of Parliament by March 10.
