The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs pointed out that respect for International Law is the only durable basis for building good bilateral relations with neighboring countries and especially with Turkey
“Any Turkish aggressive action against Greece will not only be unacceptable and condemnable, but will find the Greek people united in confronting this irresponsible and revisionist perception,” stressed Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis answering a journalist’s question after the end of today’s meeting with him Deputy Prime Minister, responsible for European Affairs, of North Macedonia Bojan Maricikj.
In particular, Mr. Varvitsiotis pointed out that respect for International Law is the only durable basis for building good bilateral relations with neighboring countries and especially with Turkey and that any kind of revisionism in the region is condemnable. This, moreover, is the message sent by the international community, condemning the violation of International Law. He also noted that Ankara should take an example from Greece’s good relations with North Macedonia, which are developed on the basis of international legitimacy and lead to a prosperous future for both peoples.
Referring to the accession process of North Macedonia to the European Union, the Deputy Minister expressed our country’s firm support for the European perspective of the Western Balkans, which has already been expressed by the Thessaloniki Agenda in 2003. “Its accession will strengthen stability and security in the region both on a political, economic and energy level,” he said, adding that the closer cooperation of our countries can contribute to energy stability in the wider region of Southeast Europe. He underlined, however, that the European perspective of North Macedonia is directly related to the full and unwavering implementation of the Prespa Agreement.
For his part, Mr. Maricikj noted that today’s meeting with Mr. Varvitsiotis sends a message of good neighborly relations and building a common European future. “Greece has a leading role in supporting the European perspective of the Western Balkans,” he said. Asked to comment on the Turkish provocation, Mr. Maricikj said that North Macedonia has always respected International Law.
