Dendias: Security around sea lanes and oceans is of utmost importance

The Foreign Minister expressed his particular satisfaction that Ghana is firmly committed to the International Law of the Sea, having signed UNCLOS in 1983.

Greece’s desire to promote Greek investments in Ghana was expressed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias in his statements after the meeting with his Ghanaian counterpart Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey in the capital Accra, with which he completed his second visit to the country that of West Africa.

In fact, he said that Greece is looking forward to the organization of a forum to promote Greek investments in Ghana, emphasizing at the same time the presence of Greek companies that are already doing business in this country, such as the Mytilinaios Group.

More generally, he expressed Greece’s interest in investing in Africa, noting: “Africa is the fastest growing economically continent, the fastest growing population in the world. Therefore, it needs investment to move forward.”

The Foreign Minister also expressed his particular satisfaction that Ghana is firmly committed to the International Law of the Sea, having signed UNCLOS in 1983. He particularly noted Ghana’s “firm commitment” to democracy, respect for human rights and the promotion of peace. In fact, he declared his satisfaction that Ghana is a member of the UN Security Council for the period 2022 – 2023, but also that he supports the principles of International Law.

In this context, he expressed thanks for Ghana’s support in Greece’s bid to be elected as a member of the UN Security Council in 2025-26. The vote takes place in 2024, but early commitment from such an important country as Ghana, a member of the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), is of great importance for Greece, he added.

Focusing further on bilateral relations, he expressed his satisfaction that the foreign ministries of the two countries have already signed a Memorandum of Understanding on political consultations and stressed that he looks forward to signing three additional memoranda when the services of the two countries are ready to do so.

Afterwards, the Foreign Minister expressed Greece’s willingness to cooperate with Ghana on security in the Gulf of Guinea. Greece has the largest fleet of ships in the world, he noted and indicated that half of the grain exported by Ukraine is transported by ships of Greek interests. In this light, he underlined that for Greece, security around the world’s sea lanes and oceans is of the utmost importance.

In fact, he invited Ghana to actively participate in the 9th Ocean Conference, which Greece will organize in 2024, together with the United States of America.

He did not fail to mention his visit to the Greek school of Agios Nikolaos, where he started today’s visit to Ghana, the second in about a year, as the previous one took place in November 2021. “I had the great pleasure, just before I came in the ministry, to visit the school of Agios Nikolaos, which is funded by Greek charities and Greek companies that are also active in Ghana” he said and pledged to visit Ghana again.

Finally, he extended an invitation to his counterpart, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of Ghana, to visit Athens as soon as possible.

It is noted that Ghana was the second stop of the foreign minister’s tour of West Africa, which started on Wednesday from the Ivory Coast and will end on Friday in Gabon.
