“It is your right to dress as you wish at a wedding. Marrying whoever you want?’ is the caption that accompanies the video posted on social media by Alexis Tsipras

The fourth video from the “How To” campaign, which was uploaded on social media by the president of SYRIZA – PS Alexis Tsipras, refers to the rights of LGBTI+ people and more specifically to marriage equality.

“It is your right to dress as you wish at a wedding. Marrying whoever you want?’ is the caption accompanying the video.

Regarding this issue, party sources point out that as of June 17, 2022, SYRIZA – PS has submitted a proposal for a law “Removing discrimination based on gender in Family Law, guaranteeing the right to marry for all persons and necessary adjustments to the legislation”, commenting that “since then, the only thing the Mitsotakis government has done in this particular issue is to set up… a committee to create action plans and this only because of the obligations towards the EU”.

“The self-proclaimed liberal Mr. Mitsotakis gives in to the ultra-conservative pressures he receives from within his party and slyly turns a blind eye to the extreme right,” they emphasize, referring to the statement of Al. Tsipras when he had signed the law proposal that “No law can impose who we will love. And when the laws are unreasonable, then we change them. And we were too late.”

“For SYRIZA – PS, the issues of rights and freedoms are of key importance, not simply as a necessity to modernize and liberalize the state or in the light of an inexpensive political correctness, but because justice is a necessary condition for equality”, add the same sources, quoting again Al’s statement. Tsipras that “there is no progress if it is not inclusive and public policies should clearly bear this sign”.

They also remind that SYRIZA-PS during the governing period had proceeded to extend the cohabitation agreement for same-sex couples as well, as it also legislated the process of legal recognition of gender identity. “A view that is common ground for the vast majority of young people in the country in real life, in education, at work, in everyday life. In all social surveys, but also in the measurements of public opinion trends, it is recorded that the new generation has absolute priority values such as equality, democracy, justice. And they express their discomfort not only for the stagnation, but also for the regression observed in this field by the current government”, underline the sources of SYRIZA-PS.

“So the frustration and anger expressed by the new generation is not only about living issues, but also because in recent years it has been faced in several phases and with its targeting by the government and the dominant rhetoric. This is how the new generation and their real needs are “sacrificed” just to satisfy, hold and/or build ultra-conservative audiences, to hold and build the people of the right. Issues capable of mobilizing the specific social and political audiences and making a decisive contribution with their vote for political change and the restoration of justice everywhere”, they report and conclude: “The “How To” campaign does not end here, it also continues with other topics, but also with Al’s own political initiatives. Tsipras”.
