Cavusoglu’s obsession with Menendez – “The US administration should not bow down to Congress”

Cavusoglu’s statements show irritation and disappointment, a fact interpreted as the Turkish Foreign Minister leaving the American capital empty-handed for the F-16 issue that is “burning” Erdogan even as election day approaches.

The attitude of Democratic Senator Bob Menendez was mentioned several times in his statements by the Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu returning to Ankara from Washington, where last night he had a crucial meeting with his American counterpart Anthony Blinken.

As Manolis Kostidis reports from Istanbul, Cavusoglu’s statements show irritation and disappointment, which is interpreted as the fact that the Turkish Foreign Minister left the American capital empty-handed for the issue of F-16s that “burns” Erdogan even as he approaches the election day.

In his statements yesterday, Cavusoglu said about the F-16s that “they didn’t give us a date, I think the process will work within their own frameworks and procedures. Today they did not give us a date for the official announcement.”

He also added that “we were also not told that ‘we will follow this policy for Menendez.’ The truth is that we also did not ask them how you will pass Menendez’s obstacles. It is known how Congress and the administration work. The laws of the United States and the Constitution have clear terms and ways of how the administration can respond to Congress, what steps it can take to respond to the attitude of Congress.”

He continued: “By obstructing an individual or individuals, the US government should not derail an important agreement between the two allies. They should not bow their heads. They didn’t tell us we’re going to do this if Menendez does this or that. And we didn’t specifically ask ‘what are you going to do with Menendez if Menendez does this’. We only said that if the government shows determination, the problem can be overcome despite the statements made by Menendez and we can solve the problem.”

At another point in his statements, he reiterated that there are indications that the balanced policy of the USA in relation to Greece has changed, referring once again to the statements of Bob Menendez.

“Although recently they tried with some of their statements to maintain some balance, in practice we see that this balance has been broken. I’m not saying this just because of some statements by Menendez and some others who are trying to block the sale of F-16s to Turkey.”
