The famous singer admitted that “growing up with a mother like me is a challenge”

It’s true that from Madonna you expect it all… This time the singer graces the cover of three different editions of “Vanity Fair” in Italy, Spain and France.

The Queen of Pop is the centerpiece of the magazine’s annual Icon Issue, which celebrates legends who “help shape modern culture”.

In the cover shot the singer poses as a weeping Virgin Mary with swords piercing her heart, while in another photo she plays Jesus at a women’s Last Supper.

The big tribute includes an extensive portfolio of images, created by photographers Luigi & Iango, which attempts to express the “values that the famous singer defended throughout her artistic journey and through her iconography”.

The magazine reported that more than 80 collaborators were involved in the creation of the tribute, noting that it will also form a future exhibition, a short film and a modern art show.

Madonna as Jesus

In an exclusive interview with the magazine, Madonna talks about feminism, sexuality, religion and diversity, focusing on her career battles against the patriarchy and the price she had to pay in order to remain herself.

The divorced mother of six admitted that “growing up with a mother like me is a challenge.” And she continued: “It was the hardest, the hardest battle,” she said of motherhood.

“Even today I struggle to figure out how to be a mother and do my job. Because, no matter who you are, having children and raising them is a work of art. And nobody gives you a manual. You have to learn from your mistakes. It is a profession that requires a lot of time. And it’s exhausting because there’s never any rest.
What makes me happiest is to see that each of them has discovered their own creativity. I never encouraged my daughter to make music or my son Rocco to paint. But I always exposed them to art, music and I’m happy that they found ways to express themselves. I have respect and admiration for them and what they do.”

Madonna’s 35-date The Celebration Tour, celebrating her four-decade career, kicks off July 15 at Vancouver’s Rogers Arena.
