Sakellaropoulou to Soltz: It is necessary to talk about war reparations

The President of the Republic called it necessary to conduct a dialogue on war reparations and the occupation loan.

The President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou met today with the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, as part of his official visit to Berlin.

Earlier, Mrs. Sakellaropoulou was given a tour of the Jewish Museum in Berlin.

During the meeting with Mr. Solz, the excellent level of relations was confirmed and the President of the Republic expressed her satisfaction with the frequency of high-level contacts between the two countries.

Mrs. Sakellaropoulou emphasized that every effort should be made so that the European Union remains united in condemning the illegal Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Referring to Turkey, Mrs. Sakellaropoulou underlined Greece’s firm position, according to which the only means of resolving interstate disputes is dialogue based on international law, and stated that our country particularly appreciates Germany’s attitude towards Turkish threats, the which are combined with an incendiary rhetoric at unprecedented levels.

Regarding the countries of the Western Balkans, the President expressed Greece’s full support for their European perspective, stressing that the issue should be a priority for the EU.

Mrs. Sakellaropoulou also made it clear that for Greece it is very important to deal effectively with the immigration and refugee issue, with respect for human rights, and to avoid its instrumentalization.

Finally, the President of the Republic pointed out the special importance that the issue of war reparations and the mortgage loan has for our country, calling it necessary to hold a relevant dialogue.
