“The past of the Holocaust concerns us all. The knowledge and constant reminder of the Nazi atrocity is the only way to prevent the awakening of evil” stresses the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou in a post on Social Media, after laying a wreath at the Holocaust Memorial in Thisio.

As he points out, “today’s slogan “Never Again” calls us to an active and permanent confrontation with fascism, anti-Semitism, racism. Let us not be complacent, let us not be silent, but sleeplessly guard our fundamental values, the only bulwark against the onslaught of hate speech.”

In particular, in her post on Facebook, Ms. Sakellaropoulou states:

“Today, International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Holocaust, we remember the most painful and heinous crime, which shocked humanity with its brutality: the systematic extermination of six million Jews, a horrifying in scope and violence genocide, but also the annihilation of all the morbid Nazi ideology considered racial, cultural, or ideological enemies (Roma, homosexuals, political opponents, the disabled or those who left the synagogue in general) in the organized hells of the lagers and outside of them, in operations of mass executions on a large scale. We remember with horror a centrally planned and horrifyingly organized genocide, which indelibly stained the 20th century and irreparably wounded the concepts of humanity and democracy.

We also commemorate the Day of Remembrance of the Greek Jewish Martyrs and Heroes of the Holocaust. The thousands of our compatriots who were forcibly transported to the death camps, while their synagogues, homes and property were looted and destroyed. Their memory remains painful and present in our consciousness.

The past of the Holocaust concerns us all. Knowledge and constant reminder of the Nazi atrocity is the only way to prevent the awakening of evil. Today’s slogan “Never Again” calls us to an active and permanent confrontation with fascism, anti-Semitism, racism. Let us not be complacent, let us not be silent, but sleeplessly guard our fundamental values, the only bulwark against the onslaught of hate speech.”
