“If we are to resume formal negotiations, our sovereign equality and status as an independent state should be recognized,” Mr Tatar added.

Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar reiterated his position in favor of a “two-state solution” in Cyprus in recent days in interviews with British newspaper envoys in the occupied territories.
Speaking to the Guardian, he described the efforts to reunify the island as a “waste of time”, accusing the Greek Cypriots of “refusing to share power” considering that it is a Greek island.
“If we are to resume formal negotiations, our sovereign equality and status as an independent state must be recognized,” added Mr. Tatar.
He also said that if there is no agreement, then “obviously” in the long term, Turkish influence in the occupied territories will increase further.
The Guardian journalist commented in the publication that “the fear of a conservative Islamization is real” among Turkish Cypriots, as well as that the international community and Turkish Cypriots disagree with the two-state solution.
However, citing advisers to the Turkish Cypriot leader, he referred to a vague working case that could involve Western recognition of the pseudo-state to attract Turkey and distance it from Russia. And Mr. Tatar added that the West does not want conflicts around hydrocarbons, implying that this could count in favor of recognizing the illegal entity he leads.
In the Daily Express, Mr. Tatar further claimed that since the Republic of Cyprus joined the EU “we had no realistic chance of a solution”.
The Express article devoted a great deal of time to the Turkish Cypriot leader’s “invitation” to King Charles to visit occupied Famagusta and specifically “the world’s first seven-star hotel”, the Golden Sands Hotel, “which was owned by the queen and belonged to the royal family,” as Mr. Tatar said. “So maybe they can come and it will be returned to the king,” he added
In both interviews, Ersin Tatar expressed his complaint and disappointment that he was not invited as a head of state to Queen Elizabeth’s funeral, but also that the British are not inaugurating a direct air link with the occupied territories.
