Michailidou: Social policy is not charity but an obligation

“The social policy that we have been implementing for these four years is not a form of state charity, it is not based on the mercy of power.

It is an obligation that derives from the principles and values ​​that found our culture, democracy and the rule of law,” said the Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Domna Michailidou, during her speech at the conference on individual rights and disability , organized by the Piraeus Bar Association.

During the conference, which is an initiative of the Piraeus Bar Association, held at the Municipal Theater of Piraeus, the necessity of defending individual rights and people with disabilities was emphasized, while, among other things, the European strategy for people with disabilities was discussed disability, the actions of the national strategy, as well as the indisputable right of people with disabilities in matters of justice and social welfare.

Among the participants were the president of the Piraeus Bar Association, Ilias Klapas, the vice-president of the General Court of the European Union, Savvas Papasavvas, the deputy mayor for Public Health and Social Services of the municipality of Piraeus, Kyriaki Bourdakou, the president of the Special Olympics, Dionysis Kodellas, the vice-president of the European Court of Justice, Christos Rozakis and the president of the Council of State, Maria Gana.

Referring to the active policies of the government, which ensure equal access of people with disabilities to social, economic and cultural life, as well as to the labor market, the Deputy Minister spoke of:

– The establishment of the Personal Assistant service and the Disability Card.

– The grant and implementation of accessibility projects.

– Institutionalization of supported employment programs.

– The early intervention program.

– Measures to strengthen the institution of Supported Living Housing.

– The digitization of the operation of the Disability Certification Centers.

– The extraordinary and horizontal financial support for people with disabilities.

The Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Domna Michailidou, said: “Disability is not helplessness, but a diversity within our society and that is how we must deal with it. That is why as a State, we ensure the right of every fellow citizen to equal participation in health, education, information and the labor market.

However, we must not forget that defending the rights of people with disabilities is not only an obligation of the state.

It is an obligation of all of us, because every citizen, having rights himself, has a duty to others and to society as a whole to respect, observe and promote the rights that he recognizes in himself and this is what the policies that we implement are aimed at the four years.

To remove the obstacles that people with disabilities experience in their daily lives and to ensure their equal participation in social, economic and cultural life. Finally, we have succeeded in changing the way society treats disability. We continue, leaving no one behind.”
