Greece’s determination to continue helping the people affected by the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria was expressed by Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias from Paraguay.

In his statement after the meeting with his Paraguayan counterpart Julio Cesar Ariola, which ended with the signing of two memoranda between the foreign ministries of the two countries, Nikos Dendias expressed the belief that it is the right time to give a political vision to the bilateral cooperation between Greece and Paraguay, moving forward with agreements in a wide number of sectors. During their meeting, the two foreign ministers signed a memorandum of understanding for the establishment of a mechanism for political consultations and a memorandum of understanding for cooperation in the field of Diplomatic Education between the foreign ministries of the two countries.

Referring to the memorandum of understanding for the establishment of a mechanism for political consultations, Nikos Dendias emphasized that it can be used as a springboard to strengthen relations between Greece and Paraguay, while at the same time he expressed his particular satisfaction for the signing of the memorandum of understanding for cooperation in Diplomatic Education sector.

In the introduction of his speech, the Minister of Foreign Affairs stated that it is a great honor and pleasure to be the first Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs to visit Paraguay, on the fourth stop of his trip to South and Central America. Focusing on the possibilities of expanding bilateral relations, he said that the long-term friendship and common values ​​of the two countries allow them to develop constructive cooperation in matters of common interest: economy, trade, energy, culture, cooperation in international organizations. Afterwards, the Foreign Minister expressed his particular satisfaction that he agreed with his Paraguayan counterpart, Greece and Paraguay to mutually support their candidacies for the UN Security Council.

Furthermore, he made special mention of the role that Greece can play for Paraguay’s relations with the EU, while expressing the will to conclude and sign as soon as possible the agreement between the EU and Mercosur (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay ). In addition, he noted that he is looking forward to the meeting between the EU and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) next July, expressing the hope that it will turn into a milestone for the rapprochement of the two continents.

Also, during the meeting, the two foreign ministers discussed issues of regional and global interest, with Nikos Dendias underlining that Greek foreign policy is deeply rooted in respect for International Law and the UN Charter, as well as the International Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) .

In this context, he expressed the “enormous respect” he has for Paraguay, for the fact that despite being a landlocked country, it has signed and ratified UNCLOS, showing how much it respects International Law. In fact, he announced that the two foreign ministers agreed that they will have constant contact and help the group of closed countries at the United Nations and other international forums.

He also did not fail to thank Paraguay for its contribution to the United Nations peacekeeping force in Cyprus with 12 Blue Helmets, as well as for its principled stance on the Cyprus issue.

Finally, reiterating his belief that today’s visit is only the beginning of a strong and fruitful cooperation between our two countries, he extended an invitation to the Paraguayan Foreign Minister to visit Athens as soon as possible.

Nikos Dendias’ visit to Paraguay will end with his speech at the country’s Diplomatic Academy on the topic: “Greece’s foreign policy in its neighborhood and beyond: Links with Latin America, the case of Paraguay”.

It is noted that Paraguay is, after Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, the fourth stop of the foreign minister’s tour of six Central and South American countries, which began on Monday, February 6.
