Panagiotopoulos met with a Delegation of American MPs in Souda

The developments of the war in Ukraine and the defense cooperation between Greece and the USA were at the center of the meeting of the Minister of National Defense, Nikos Panagiotopoulos, with an eight-member cross-party delegation of American parliamentarians, led by the chairman of the Defense Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives, Mike Rogers. at the facilities of the Naval Defense Training Center (KENAP), in Souda, Crete.

The meeting was attended by General Konstantinos Floros, the Chief of the General Staff of the Greek Armed Forces, and the US Ambassador to Athens, George Tsounis.

As announced by the Ministry of National Defense, during the meeting:

The importance of the strategic defense partnership between Greece and the USA, and the mutual defense cooperation agreement (MDCA) as well as its two amendment protocols (2019 and 2021) was highlighted, for strengthening the defense and security of the two countries and stability in the wider region .

The role of Greece as a strong, stable and reliable ally and the geopolitical value of Souda and Alexandroupolis were emphasized. In this context, the importance of investments to upgrade their facilities and infrastructure was highlighted. Furthermore, Mr. Panagiotopoulos referred to the importance of implementing Greek-US defense equipment programs, taking into account the capabilities, the comparative advantage and the know-how of the Greek defense industry.

With regard to the developments of the war in Ukraine, the need to continue providing defense and humanitarian aid to counter the Russian invasion, but also to defend the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, was underlined.

Finally, referring to the security situation in the Eastern Mediterranean, Mr. Panagiotopoulos emphasized the importance of avoiding destabilizing, transgressive and revisionist behaviors that go against the fundamental principles of International Law and the principle of good neighborliness.
