K. Mitsotakis was informed about the capabilities of the airbase, while he had the opportunity to see the MQ-9 “Reaper” unmanned attack aircraft up close.
The 110th Fighter Wing at the Larissa Air Base was visited in the morning by the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. It is the first stop of his visit to Larissa today.
The Prime Minister was informed about the capabilities of the air base, while he had the opportunity to see the MQ-9 “Reaper” drones (in Greek “reaper”), to be informed about their capabilities and electronic equipment.
The Larissa base is one of the points where the defense cooperation between Greece and the United States is manifested, as American drones regularly operate from there, while projects have been implemented for their maintenance and housing.
Larissa Air Base is the first organized combat air group which was built and operated in Greece. Its history begins with the landing of the first Greek aircraft named “Daedalos” on September 29, 1912. The mission of 110 AM is to maintain the means and systems for undertaking air operations and dealing with emergency situations.
The Prime Minister was welcomed by the Deputy Minister of National Defense Nikos Hardalias, the Chief of Defense Forces Konstantinos Floros, the Chief of Tactical Air Force Lt. Gen. Giorgos Fasoulas and the US Ambassador to Greece, George Tsunis.
What are the new MQ-9 Reaper drones?
It is noted that the General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper is an unmanned attack aircraft, developed by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems mainly for the US Air Force. These UAVs can track the “enemy” by transmitting real-time the image of the field to the operations centers, collect information, but also participate in search and rescue operations, having the ability to remain without refueling in the air for up to 48 hours and extended radius of action.
