Economou’s message for the opening of schools: The government is responsible for the final decisions

by

The government is responsible for the final decisions on whether to open the schools or not on January 10, government spokesman Giannis Oikonomou clarified during a briefing for journalists.

Asked what the government will do in case the committee of experts suggests extending the opening for a week, Mr. Economou characteristically stated that “the suggestions of the experts are always taken very seriously by the government, which of course has the responsibility for final decisions “.

“The basic intention of the government is to open schools and our main priority is to open them safely for students, teachers and their families. We will do what is required, that the experts suggest us in order to contain these two goals “, he commented earlier, however.

Giannis Oikonomou invoked educational, psychological and social reasons for the opening of the schools.

The goal, he stressed, is to ensure the absolute health of students, teachers with whatever means we have, and with whatever protocol is deemed necessary.

The experts’ suggestions, I imagine, will include the possibility of an outbreak of cases, and will clearly take into account whether the critical element is the number of cases or we will observe the pleasant phenomenon we observed in other European countries with reduced hospital admissions and ICUs, he said.

Regarding the diagnostic test, he clarified that what the government decides to do, it will do as long as it has ensured the adequacy of the required diagnostic tests.

“Over the past period, until Friday, more than 85 million self-tests had been distributed free of charge to vaccinated and unvaccinated people who had been given to over 7.5 million citizens. “32 million self-tests were distributed to students in schools from September to December, and 85% of cases were detected,” the government spokesman said.

Furthermore, Mr. Economou continued, more than 8.5 million rapid tests and PCR free tests have been given to the entire population by EODY, while they are not included in these rapid and PCR provided by the NSS structures.

Our country, noted the government spokesman, is among 4 or 5 countries with the most frequent testing in Europe. More than 300 million euros have been allocated for testing.
