“Europe will never be complete as long as Cyprus remains divided” he emphasized the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola during her joint statements with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulidis in Brussels, while underlining that “this division of a member state is not only a Cypriot issue, but a European issue”.

At the same time, Mrs. Metsola pointed out that “We will not turn our backs on Cyprus and our shared ambition to see the reunification of your island under the auspices of the UN peace plan” adding that “Cyprus’ solidarity with Turkey after the devastating earthquake last month is proof that we can build trust”.

Note that “Cyprus is the main gateway to the Middle East, to Asia. I know the challenges that Cypriots face in immigration. And again, this is not a Cyprus issue. No member state should be left alone to deal with migration flows alone”.

“I look forward to hearing from the president his proposals for a new impetus in the resumption of negotiations. For us, we can be as clear as possible, we are ready to support in all possible ways, we will put all our resources at your disposal. At the end of the day, peace is our goal.” Roberta Metzola reported.

From his side the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulidis spoke of a “strong interest” on the part of Mrs. Metsola for the solution of the Cyprus problem, speaking of a “European issue”. In addition, Mr. Christodoulidis mentioned that the discussions are about issues “of common concern”, including as he said “of course the Cyprus issue and how the EU can help us to return to the negotiating table and resolve the Cyprus issue”.

“I really believe that the EU can play a catalytic role in bringing the Turkish side back to the table and through negotiations from where they left off back in 2017” noted Nikos Christodoulidis. Regarding immigration, the Cypriot President underlined that it is “a very important and serious issue in Cyprus and not only, an issue in which we need the solidarity of the EU”.

Ukraine is at the table at the same time with Nikos Christodoulidis noting that “Cyprus stands on the right side of history, Violation of sovereignty and territorial integrity of any country cannot be accepted”.

Earlier, Nikos Christodoulidis had a meeting with the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen and the President of the European Council, Charles Michel. With her post on Twitter, the President of the Commission said: “I am glad to have met President Christodoulidis before the European Council. We discussed his proposal for the resumption of negotiations to resolve the Cyprus issue, within the agreed framework. We also discussed how to further support Ukraine and address the circumvention of our sanctions on Russia.”

According to sources, the President of the Republic of Cyprus had the opportunity to present his proposal to the President of the European Council, Charles Michel and the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the logic of which, as the same sources state, was also recognized by the two both in relation to the resolution of the Cyprus issue and for the regional and geopolitical dimension, since it could lead to a mutually beneficial state of affairs.

Michel and von der Leyen welcomed the positive approach given by Nikos Christodoulidis from the day he took office and which is developing through concrete actions and proposals, while they see a window of opportunity, the sources added.

As the President of the Republic of Cyprus had mentioned, in his interview with ERT, the Cypriot government’s aim is for the EU to assume a leading role through the appointment of a political personality, who will take initiatives for a solution to the Cyprus problem, always within the agreed framework of the United Nations.
