What will the prime minister ask the leaders of the European countries
With the position that it should to open a meaningful discussion at the level of European leaders on the rules of economic governance, so that this very important debate does not end up at the level of finance ministers, is coming to the European Council meeting today and tomorrow Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
Government sources they report that in this direction the prime minister will seek coordination with the countries of the European South. None of the countries of the European South – much less Greece – is today where it was during the debt crisis, and the existence of reliable rules guaranteeing medium-term fiscal stability is essential for fiscal sustainability.
The prime minister is expected to emphasize that the rules should not undermine them necessary investments in a number of areas, including the green and digital transition.
Mr. Mitsotakis will point out that the experience of the extreme fiscal restrictions of the past should not be repeated, as, apart from everything else, it is counterproductive.
He will add that this discussion should be based on facts and economic data and not on the basis of internal political calculations or stereotypes that do not correspond to today’s reality.
The Prime Minister looks forward to to start this discussion, in view of the Eurosummit scheduled for Friday, in which the head of the ECB, Christine Lagarde, will also be present.
On the issue of electricity market reform, the prime minister is expected to highlight the need to accelerate investments in the North-South and Western Balkan electricity grids – on this issue the Greek side has submitted a relevant proposal to the Member States and the European Commission.
Before the meeting of the European Council, the Prime Minister will participate in the Summit.
