“There is a prejudice against the politicians of the South… They ignore me, they have forgotten me” declares Eva Kaili
Her first statements Eva Kaili through the Haren prison in Belgium, where she remains detained for the Qatargate scandal, reports the Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera citing Deborah Bergamini, a member of Forza Italia and the Italian delegation to the Plenary of the Council of Europe, who visited her .
“I am innocent, I will prove it. But I don’t feel like a victim, I feel like a trophy… The trophy of a political persecution that includes a prejudice, a prejudice that exists in any case against southern European parliamentarians and politicians. The Maltese, the Greeks, the Italians and so on” he supports, speaking to Bergamini.
At the meeting that took place last Monday at Haren Prison, Eva Kaili appeared in jeans, sneakers and the white shirt and green vest worn by male and female prisoners.
“I appreciate your courage. You are the first MP to come here to the prison to see how I am. No one has come so far. None of my party, nobody from my Greece. After the uproar of the first few days, no one is talking about this issue anymore. They ignore me, they have forgotten me.”
For the rest of those involved in Qatargate, he only states that “Panceri (the alleged mastermind of the scandal) was very manipulative with my partner (the Francesco Giorgi)”.
Eva Kaili stated that “in the first six weeks I thought about suicide. Many times. Then something changed,” but does not specify what changed.
As she told her interlocutor, she is studying French and Dutch while she is in prison. “When this story is over, he told me he wants to get back into politics,” says Bergamini.
According to the Italian politician “the crimes she is accused of are very serious, and if she is found guilty she will have to pay. But the presumption of innocence it must be applied to everyone, including politicians. Otherwise we are talking about dark times in history”.
Bergamini also raises the issue of her two-year-old daughter Kaili, saying that “if Eva Kaili is found guilty then justice will take over. But it’s not her daughter’s fault. Instead she is in a position to experience the absence of her mother and that will affect her life.”
The Italian MEP reports that she has found the deposed vice-president of the European Parliament in an emotional test but combative, not depressed. “The investigation will continue on its course, as it should, but I repeat that the presumption of innocence it should apply to everyone. I am amazed by the silence of the politicians and the hypocrisy surrounding this story.”
