In Heraklion, Crete, the first keynote speech of Yanis Varoufakis in the context of the pre-election campaign
The presentation of candidates Day25 was made in the morning in Heraklion, Crete, by the secretary of the party, Yanis Varoufakis, who announced the name of the legendary Psarantoni in the honorable last place of the State ballot.
The names of five candidates of the party were also announced, namely Giorgos Logiadis (MP of Heraklion of MeRA25), Mario Dionelis (Journalist, Press Officer of MeRA25 in Crete), Michalis Kritsotakis (Regional Councilor, Former Member of Parliament of Heraklion with SYRIZA until 2015), Apostolis Louloudakis (Economologist, Member of the Committee of MeRA25), and Irene Charonitis (merchant).
Follow three-hour discussion with the audience with matters concerning her energy, bad loans and miningup to her rights LGBT community, Europe and immigration.
When asked about the issue of mining, the Secretary of MeRA25 replied: “Besides their destructive effects on the environment, mining will not take place for the next 15 years, that is, until the hydrocarbons are useless. But even if they don’t pump even half a barrel of oil, the profit is huge, both for the contracts that are closed for future extractions and for the studies. Only the oligarchy wins, but so does Erdogan, for whom the joint venture agreement with Israel is a rhetorical gift that he can present as an encirclement of Turkey, reinforcing his own warmongering narrative. On the other fuel and energy pricess remain high as profiteering runs rampant unfettered by the government and its decorative regulators. It is not possible to buy wind turbines second hand, get the “free” wind and pay for the energy at the same price as if it had been produced from liquefied natural gas from Texas! The cancellation of all mining, the abolition of the energy exchange, the ceiling on the price of energy, the creation of serious green energy infrastructure (wind turbines in the seas, photovoltaics on every roof, etc.) is the only solution for our country”.
On the occasion of the issue of red loans, Yanis Varoufakis also addressed the matter of Arkalochori: “Arkalochori is an example of what Greece has become: on the one hand, auctions by an Irish predatory fund and on the other hand, the accounts of the earthquake victims have been frozen by the tax office. Did you know that those who decided to lay hands on the accounts of the earthquake victims in Arkalochori, the AADE commanders, were appointed by Brussels? We created MeRA25 because we know that we cannot continue like this, the country is not sustainable. In recent months and especially in recent weeks, we are again seeing people with smiles on their faces, who are starting to believe again that the break that will get us out of this impasse is possible. We, the people, are here to support them.”
Finally, when asked about the euro and the position of our country in it, he characteristically said: “If we had left the euro in 2015, we would have experienced a short but even more intense crisis that would have lasted 18 months, at the end of which the economy would have returned to pre-crisis levels. I am also sure that today the Greek economy would fly. Although I remain convinced that our stance not to seek exit from the euro was correct then, today it is clear that the policies of rupture that we seek because they offer breath and hope for the people, cannot be done within the euro. This does not make us anti-European: just as we demonstrate against the Greek government because we love our country, we also demonstrate against the EU because we love Europe.”
In closing, the Secretary emphasized: “We are here in unity to show in practice what convergence of the left means, with MeRA25-Alliance for Breakup, which also from this hall in Heraklion sends a message for the establishment of a new united front of a of the great campaigning Left”.
