Emphasis on maintaining channels of communication with Russia was given by Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias in his speech at the extraordinary meeting of NATO Ministers, via teleconference. In particular, according to diplomatic sources, in his speech, Nikos Dendias underlined that Greece supports the NATO dialogue with Russia, in the context of the dual approach. In fact, in this context, he said that Greece welcomes the convening of the NATO-Russia Council next week.
According to the same sources, Nikos Dendias added that in order to achieve a meaningful dialogue, de-escalation is needed and that this dialogue, in order to bring tangible results, will take time.
It is also pointed out that the Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed that in this dialogue our positions should be emphasized from the beginning, which are based on common principles and respect for international law. “The basic principle is to condemn any violation of the territorial integrity of states, a principle that NATO allies must respect in all cases, as well as countries with a partnership with NATO and especially Ukraine, which calls for international solidarity.”
Finally, the Foreign Minister also pointed out that the OSCE could play an important role in reducing tensions and controlling armaments.
