On May 8, a rapporteur will be appointed for the request to lift the immunity of Alexis Georgoulis, as reported by SKAI’s Brussels correspondent Efi Koutsokosta. The lawyers of Mr. Georgoulis did not finally get the case file, that it will be done after his immunity is liftedas without the waiver of immunity nothing can proceed and the case cannot go to court.

Under the Belgian legal framework his lawyers can take the case file only by lifting immunity and with the initiation of criminal proceedings, so that Mr. Georgoulis is designated as a defendant.

The rapporteur will examine the file of the request, and then the competent committee of legal affairs of the European Parliament will meet, and the vote will be taken in order to refer the matter to the Plenary of the body. The next committee meeting it’s may 30, and if the lifting of immunity is voted there then it will have to be defined when the matter will go to the Plenary. However, it is not self-evident that the case will go to the next Plenary Session, which meets after May 30, it can be referred to the next one as well, so we reach the summer, maybe even later.

The defensive line he chooses has a political undertone

Political implications and expediencies “he sees” in case his side Alexis Georgoulisas seen from yesterday’s announcement by his Belgian lawyersthrough which they informed that they did not receive access to the case file, as the case is at the preliminary investigation stage.

Belgian lawyers connect the “research schedule” of the Belgian Authorities with the fact that in a few weeks in Greece we have elections, thus attempting to give a political tone to the case, even implying that the process is directed, with the aim of causing political damage to him and, indirectly, to SYRIZA.

In their statement, the Belgian lawyers say that Alexis Georgoulis “cannot help but be concerned about the timing of this investigation and is deeply sorry. Indeed, while the events and the complaint date back to 2020, it is unfortunate that only three years later this complaint is being made public – just a few weeks before the elections in Greece”.

As for the heavy accusations of rape and abuse, Alexis Georgoulis, through his lawyers, categorically denies them: “Mr. Georgoulis refutes the accusations of Mrs. Chronopoulou“, while it is noted that he requested the lifting of his immunity “in order to shed ample light on the case”.
