The 52 acres acquired by the municipality, for 2 million euros, will become recreational and green areas
In the municipality of Chania “passed,” the former camp “Markopoulou”, in the area of Agios Ioannis, as announced by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
Mr. Mitsotakis in its context two-day tour in Crete, he was at the camp in the afternoon and toured its premises, accompanied by the mayor of Chania Panagiotis Simandirakis, the Deputy Minister of National Defense Nikos Hardalia, the MPs Dora Bakoyannis, Vassilis Digalakis and Yiannis Kaselakis and officials of the municipality.
“It is about a significant contribution in the quality of life of the citizens of Chania”, noted Mr. Mitsotakis as, as he emphasized, this is the satisfaction of a request of several decades. He also added: “it was an essentially inactive camp. It is a decision that is a continuation of many other similar decisions, with the aim of exploiting the real estate of the Armed Forces, always for the benefit of local communities”.
As the prime minister pointed out, “now the responsibility passes to the municipality in order to quickly carry out the studies. We will always be helpful so that it becomes a point of reference for all Chanio residents and visitors”. The prime minister also referred to citizens who were protesting peacefully outside the camp, with a request that the area be turned into a park, assuring that the area will be used for green, recreation and sports and there will be no new construction just for the creation of some small refreshments.
From the side of mayor of Chania after thanking the prime minister, he said that immediately works will begin for the reconstruction of the camp, which after years of efforts, as he pointed out, is being handed over to the local community. Describing today as historic, he also thanked Mr. Hardalia and Mrs. Bakoyannis for their contribution to the effort for the municipality to acquire the camp site.
From 54 total acres which occupies the former camp ta 52 is acquired by the municipality for 2 million euroswhile 2 acres remain with the armed forces in order to meet the housing needs of the personnel serving in units of the area.
The concession of the camp to the municipality was made as the staff and activities of the Markopoulos camp were transferred outside the city of Chania to the Agias camp.
His concession constituted standing request of the local community, in order to utilize it by meeting existing needs.
