The country is on its way to the polls on May 21. These are the 20th national elections of the Post-colonial period and the 67th since the establishment of the Greek state.

The upcoming showdown will be held with its electoral system simple analogbased on the electoral law passed in 2016.

The distribution of seats

According to him, the parties that pass the threshold of 3% will be allocated proportionally 285 seats based on the percentage corresponding to their votes. Another 12 seats come from the State ballots and the remaining three seats will be elected for the first time by Greeks abroad.

If no government is formed and we are led to second elections, on July 2, we will vote with its system enhanced analog which was voted by the Parliament in 2020. In this case the first party, if it receives more than 25%, receives bonus 20 seats which increase according to the percentage, with a maximum limit of 50 seats if its percentage is at 40%.

Those registered in the electoral rolls amount to 9,810,040, of which 4,760,042 are men and 5,049,998 are women. For the first time, 438,595 young people between the ages of 17 and 21 will vote. Those born in 2006 have the right to vote.

Citizens can be informed about the place they are voting through the platform of the Ministry of the Interior “Find out where you vote“, entering their personal information.

Most approved applications were submitted to United Kingdom4,556 and followed by Germany with 3,226, the USA with 1,617, the Belgium with 1,607 and n Cyprus with 1,432.

96% of foreign voters will exercise their right to vote in the country of their permanent residence, while the rest (4%) will have to switch to another as the required number of 50 voters was not met in order to set up a polling station. This development has caused displeasure mainly among Northern Epirotians, who in order to vote will have to move to a country further away from Greece, specifically to Bulgaria.

Uniformed – sailors

Registration in special electoral rolls is also required for the cases of military personnel serving in the Armed Forces or the Coast Guard – Hellenic Coast Guard as well as the personnel of the Hellenic Police and Fire Brigade, in order to vote in the parliamentary elections, in the place where they serve, if it is different by him, in whose electoral rolls they are registered. In this case, they are obliged to declare to their service the municipality where they are registered in order to be included in the statements sent to the competent deputy governor.

Similarly, sailors serving on a Greek-flagged ship, which on election day is in a Greek port, are registered in special electoral lists to vote in the municipality where the ship is located.

Also, Greek citizens, who are imprisoned and have not been deprived of the right to vote, vote in the electoral section of the store where they are detained, based on special electoral lists, in which they are registered for this purpose.

Sections for the disabled

From this election people with disabilities will exercise their right to vote with less inconvenience. A provision of the last bill passed before the closing of Parliament provides for the operation of a reception and support area for voters with disabilities and reduced mobility in each polling station.

When the voter arrives at the venue, the judicial representative who goes there is informed, providing him with all the ballots and the required file. If necessary, the voter enters the screen together with his companion, if he has one, but also with the judicial representative. After the voter leaves the voting booth, the judicial representative takes the envelope containing the ballot paper chosen by the voter, takes it to the corresponding polling station and drops it into the ballot box.

Entry to the polling station and the reception area is allowed together with a service dog (guide) for people with disabilities.

Earlier transmission of results

The method of gathering and transmitting the results on election night is modernized, significantly reducing the time of the secure result.

Until today, telegrams with the results of each polling station were directed to the municipality, from there to the region and then to the Ministry of the Interior, where the data was entered into the central system.

From the next election each judicial representative will have a tablet through which he will transmit the results directly to the ministry of his polling station after the end of counting.

In this way it is estimated that at 20:00, i.e. one hour after the polls close, there will be a safe result in 25% of the territory and at 20:30 – 21:00 for 80%.

The traditional system of transmission of provisional results will continue to apply for security and cross-checking purposes.
