It was January 11, 2021 when Kyriakos Pierrakakis announced that the platform for vaccinations of citizens over 85 years old was opened.
A post in a personal style and tone for the one year since the start of “Operation Freedom”, the Minister of Digital Government Kyriakos Pierrakakis, refers to those moments: “A special place in the life and memories of all of us in the team of the Ministry of Digital Government has the evening of January 11, 2021. It was the start date of “Operation Freedom”, the vaccination campaign for the general population of the country, with the platform initially opening to our fellow citizens over 85 years.
On the night of January 11, we were well aware of the magnitude of the responsibility. We knew what it meant to wait for those who had been prioritized in the vaccination, for their children and grandchildren who had already entered the emvolio.gov.gr platform waiting to open, as well as on their mobile phones for those who had registered in the intangible prescription waiting to come the sms with the appointment. “At the same time, thousands of pharmacists and KEP employees would be called on the morning of January 12 to serve hundreds of thousands of citizens who would also rush to make an appointment. None of us slept that night.”
Mr. Pierrakakis speaks of a greater challenge “of recent decades in terms of supply chain and customer service. A significant number of engineers, executives from the Public as well as the private sector, all had to control every parameter of the system at all times. From the sms and the correct reception by the citizen, to the exact number of vaccine doses, the proper storage and maintenance of these in every vaccination center “.
Referring to the vaccination program, Mr. Pierrakakis points out:
“Currently, more than 17,900,000 vaccination appointments have been made. More than 80% of the adult population is now partially covered, while at the same time almost 4 million of our fellow citizens have already taken their commemorative dose. Today, we can say with certainty that Greece managed to build a digital vaccine management system when other major countries failed. But what we really keep from this big business are the lessons of effort and dedication to a goal: to design systems focused on the citizen and his needs, to quickly identify and correct failures, to create interdisciplinary teams and to work collaboratively, to constantly re-evaluate our methods. If the vaccine against COVID-19 is our health passport for the future, emvolio.gov.gr is our digital compass, the digital model of the services we want to build “.
