The way is open for the lifting of the immunity of the MEP, Alexis Georgoulis, as the relevant request will be examined during an extraordinary meeting of the Legal Affairs Committee of the European Parliament (JURI) next Tuesday, May 23.
For the former SYRIZA MEP, in accordance with the Commission’s relevant procedure, a rapporteur was appointed from mid-April by the European People’s Party, the Pole Andrej Halitski, who undertook to prepare the relevant file in order to examine in such a short period of time the request to withdraw immunity granted by the Belgian authorities, as there is an investigation against him for “serious criminal offences”.
After all, Mr. Georgoulis himself has requested that the process be expedited so that his lawyers have access to the case file, as this will not be able to happen if the immunity is not lifted.
At the same extraordinary meeting of JURI, the request to lift the immunity of the MEP, Maria Spyrakis, will be examined.
For Maria Spyrakis, details of the case file recently leaked to Politico indicate that investigators accuse her of misleading the European Parliament about the activities of her associates and irregularities regarding their “virtual trips”, but there is no evidence that the Greek MEP took kickbacks from wages or false compensation. From the beginning, there was no such charge, she recalled while speaking to “K” recently, and she now expects her immunity to be lifted, in order to close her case once and for all.
