When asked if the calm waters can continue in relations with Turkey, Nikos Dendias repeated that it is a “window of opportunity” which can become a “door” if both sides try
Greece and Turkey, two neighboring countries, can – since the climate is good at the moment – find an edge, maybe they can take their difference to The Hague, the foreign minister emphasized Nikos Dendias in an interview with Parapolitika 90.1 FM. He said there are currently no initiatives to appeal to The Hague, “because this is something that the governments that will emerge after the elections, with a political capital, have to look at with a fresh eye.”
Should such a thing be done? The answer of Nikos Dendias is that “of course something like this should be done and there is no reason to expect any initiative from a third party”.
When asked if calm waters can continue in relations with Turkey, Nikos Dendias repeated that is a “window of opportunity” which can become a “door” if both sides try. In fact, he declared convinced that it can become a “door” if Turkey grasps the opportunity and declared that he was very satisfied that he ends his term at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs “with a climate in Greek-Turkish relations that allows us to hope that something can be done there as well” .
In this context, he stated that Turkey’s interest is to have a friendly Greece and noted that while “we see it and seek it, Turkey in many phases does not see it and does not seek it”.
He noticed that Turkey, during the pre-election period eshow responsibility, with very few exceptions, as well as that there was tremendous attention in the Aegean, in the Eastern Mediterranean, there were no overflights, violations, flight activity. “There was a climate that allows, right after the elections of both countries, to make an attempt to re-approach and discuss the difference,” he explained.
Asked to respond to his report during yesterday’s interview, that at some point, we reached the limits of war with Turkey, the foreign minister said that the moment when the Greek frigate rammed into the helipad of the Turkish frigate with the fleets in the Eastern Mediterranean, is obvious what a moment it was. “That is, when two countries – being members of the same military alliance is an oxymoron – take their fleets out, and all their ships out, things are not good,” he noted.
Regarding the positions of the parties in foreign policy, Nikos Dendias found that there is a national understanding.
He also highlighted the geostrategic role of Alexandroupoli and the importance of its timely inclusion in Agreements and having created infrastructure.
He then referred to Albania: “After many years, we have reached an agreement in principle, an exemplary agreement on the issue of maritime zones in the northern Ionian Sea, which includes exactly, exactly what we propose to Turkey and Turkey refuses. International Law of the Sea, 12 Nautical Miles, The Hague’ write down.
Regarding the arrest of the newly elected mayor of Heimarra, Fredis Beleris, he repeated the words of Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, that if there is no irrefutable evidence, then the arrest of a candidate two days before municipal elections is a huge scandal. In addition, he emphasized that Albania’s accession path to the EU leads to the rule of law. “In a rule of law judicial scandals do not happen” he pointed out meaningfully.
Finally, when asked if Beleris could be in prison after his election, he pointed out that Albania entered a great adventure and added that he does not understand the reason.
