Verbal attack by a ND executive against the head of the SYRIZA State ballot, Othona Iliopoulos, at the Boston consulate, SYRIZA America complains.

A statement issued states:

“SYRIZA Americas denounces an episode of embezzlement and thuggish behavior against the head of the national ballot of SYRIZA Othon Iliopoulos, during the voting at the Consulate in Boston.

Around 3:00 p.m. and while the voting was progressing smoothly since the morning in a mild and friendly atmosphere, among all those present and the representatives of the parties, without tensions and without even political discussions, he invaded the Consulate premises, announcing that he is “supervisor elections” the executive of the New Republic George Laskarisbrandishing his party credentials and demanding that the SYRIZA candidate Othona Iliopoulos to leave the premises of the Consulate.

He responded to K. Iliopoulos’ calm refusal to step down by storming the voting hall, demanding that the process be interrupted and that Mr. Iliopoulos leave the Consulate.

He then threatened the SYRIZA electoral representative.

The electoral committee interrupted the process for a few minutes and indicated after a meeting to the furious supervisor of New Democracy that according to article 88 of PD 96/2007 and article 29 par.7 of law 3731/2008 that “candidates have the right to attend in voting, to propose any observation or objection regarding the order of voting ………etc”.

Giorgos Laskaris then verbally attacked Mr. Iliopoulos, cursing him as “immoral” for his political positions.

Finally, he voluntarily removed himself from the voting area, after he managed to create a disturbance and an unpleasant atmosphere for those present.

SYRIZA denounces thuggery that shows the ethos of the ND which is inconsistent with the spirit and morals of the Greek community in Boston.

SYRIZA calls on all citizens to be democratically alert in tomorrow’s nationwide vote. Finally, he wants to thank the Consul and all the members of the Boston election committee for their composure and their impeccable professional and political attitude in the face of such vulgar provocations.”
