Processes and discussions in the official opposition party after the result of May 21
The debate within SYRIZA is heating up for the next day in the party, after the defeat it suffered in the May 21 elections.
“As you know, victories have many fathers, but defeats always have one,” said yesterday Alexis Tsipras outside the presidential palace, also taking responsibility for the unpleasant outcome: “I personally take full responsibility for this outcome, but in my own moral vocabulary ‘taking responsibility’ means standing and fighting. And that’s what I will do,” he noted.
However, the discussion in Koumoundourou has been opened, even though executives who are close to the SYRIZA president reject such a possibility.
His statement was typical Kostas Zachariadis who referring to an earlier statement by Giorgos Katsifaras supported Alexis Tsipras saying: “Many of us, even the doorman of our apartment building wouldn’t know us if it wasn’t for Tsipras. In my case, it is absolutely true, as it is for many others. When a party, a place, is in difficulty, we, who have been involved in this case since we were little and hurt this party, will support it.”
The fierce reaction of the former governor Renas Douros caused by the statements of the member of parliament Dimitris Papadimoulis who, speaking to Action24, mentioned specific names of executives, which he said should come forward:
“The challenge for us is for the one month until the elections, with Tsipras in charge and bringing forward new executives, who distinguished themselves in these polls, which are very difficult for us like the Efi Ahtsioglousuch as Alexis Haritsissuch as Nasos Iliopouloswho proposed with a very large number of crosses in their regions, to organize our own reconstruction with greater political and programmatic clarity for the plan we want for Greece and for the agenda of our opposition” said Mr. Papadimoulis.
In response, Rena Dourou commented that Papadimouli’s statements are disgusting: “At best, they are disgusting (Papadimouli’s statements), so as not to give rise to other political plans,” she emphasized while speaking on Alpha radio.
He accused the MEP, that although he “noisily” has not participated in the collective bodies of SYRIZA for a long time, he preferred to make suggestions to Alexis Tsipras on television.
“These do not honor either his course or the fact that the world has honored him and sent him to the European Parliament, but a short hallelujah psalm, we will say those too” added Mrs. Dourou.
Papadimoulis also distanced himself from the statements Andreas Xanthoswho however told the First Program that the topic of leadership is not taboo.
Mr. Xanthos noted that it is not possible to discuss now what the party’s moves will be in the long term, as a distance from the current situation is required, even though the electoral cycle has been completed with the next elections, however he said “I believe that after such a negative result no one can say that ‘this is a taboo subject, I don’t discuss it'”.
“However, I believe that the crucial issue is mainly the identity, the physiognomy and the strategy. Now for the medium term, for the immediate run up to the elections, I think we need to make our programmatic peaks and priorities much clearer. In other words, in this period we must not address ourselves in terms of a national audience, but go and focus mainly on groups, social strata which are struggling today and have proven to be under pressure and are insecure in their daily lives and especially in the economic part. To highlight the priorities related to the welfare state, to the public health system, to the reconstruction of the public administration, to the removal of the customer culture in the state,” he added.
Tomorrow with the meeting of the Central Committee, an effort will be made, Mr. Xanthos said, to condense this climate “into a restart that can be done, any restart that can be done these days, with a clarity in the programmatic and political discourse”.
