The lifting of her immunity Maria Spyraki the European Parliament decided on Monday by majority. Of the 16 members present, nine MEPs voted in favor of lifting immunity (S&D, RE and Greens), six voted against (EPP and ECR) while two abstained (ID).

In a letter submitted by the head of the European Public Prosecutor’s office dated December 15, 2022, the MEP’s immunity had been requested to be lifted due to the ongoing investigation into “events that may constitute fraud of the EU’s financial interests”.

There were alleged irregularities in two cases:

  • Accredited Parliamentary Assistant (APA) was not present at his place of work in Brussels between November 2016 and February 2020 to carry out his duties
  • Collection of compensations for missions not carried out by two APA partners of Spyrakis between November 2014 – February 2020 for the first, and July 2014 – February for the second.

Maria Spyraki has paid the Parliament all the sums unduly paid to date. However, possible criminal liability is not excluded.
