The upcoming elections will be held with a restricted combination (list) and not with a preference cross
The Ministry of the Interior answers eight questions about what applies to the elections of June 25 and what changes in relation to those of May 21.
Are the parliamentary elections of June 25, 2023 the second round of the elections held on May 21, 2023?
No. The parliamentary elections of 25 June 2023 are a separate, new electoral process, independent of that of 21 May 2023. Therefore, designations such as “second round” or “re-election” are not correct.
Does the electoral system remain the same?
The parliamentary elections of June 25, 2023 will be held with the enhanced proportional system, as opposed to those of May 21, which were held with the simple proportional system.
How do I vote for MPs?
The upcoming elections will be held with a restricted combination (list) and not with a preference cross. With this process, MPs are elected based on the order of their ranking on the ballot paper of each electoral district, which is determined by the respective party staffs. Therefore, we do NOT put a cross on the party ballots. Besides, there will be no pen on the screens of the polling stations that will be created.
Are the ballots used in the May 21, 2023 election still valid?
No. The parliamentary elections of June 25, 2023 will be held with new ballots, which will be printed based on what the current law stipulates. Therefore, ballots that related to the elections of May 21, 2023 and for any reason remained in the possession of the voters become invalid and cannot be used.
I am a non-resident. Can I vote where I live?
Yes, as long as your application has been submitted to the relevant Municipality and processed by it no later than 30 April 2023, you can vote in your Municipality of residence. An application that is not processed by this date will not be taken into account for the upcoming election process. In any case, voters are advised to refer to the Home Office’s Know Where You Vote platform to find out where they are voting.
I am a Greek living abroad and I missed the deadline to vote in the previous elections. What will apply now?
Greeks abroad can vote at their place of residence as long as the application for registration in the special electoral rolls has been submitted to the relevant platform of the Ministry of the Interior (https:/apodimoi.gov.gr) until Wednesday, May 17, 2023. It is clarified that for the approval of the application, the criteria as defined by the applicable law are applied.
In the previous elections I voted abroad, but on June 25, 2023 I will be in Greece. Will I be able to vote?
The deadline for submitting an application for suspension of registration in the special electoral rolls abroad was Friday, May 26, 2023. Any application submitted after this date will not be considered for the upcoming election process. In any case, voters are advised to refer to the Home Office’s Know Where You Vote platform to find out where they are voting.
Am I voting in the same polling station where I voted in the 21 May 2023 election?
This is most likely, however as there may be some changes to polling stations, all voters are strongly advised to refer to the Home Office Know Where You Vote platform to find out where they are voting.
