The president of the USA Joe Biden will proceed to transfer of F-16 fighters to Turkeyin consultation with Congress, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan announced on Tuesday, in the wake of the tripartite Vilnius agreement on Sweden’s accession to NATO.

“US President Joe Biden will move forward with the transfer of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey in consultation with congress, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said on Tuesday” referred to in the telegram.

In October 2021 Ankara has asked the US for new F-16 fighter jets as well as modernization kits for its existing F-16s. The $6 billion deal will include the sale of 40 F-16s as well as modernization kits for 79 fighter jets already in the Turkish Air Force’s inventory.

Although the Biden administration has repeatedly said it wants to move forward with the sale of F-16 jets to Turkey, lawmakers on Capitol Hill, such as Sen. Menendez, have vowed not to let it go by setting conditions including making the purchase contingent on Ankara’s approval of Sweden’s accession to NATO.
