South Africans have been warned to keep warm as a cold front sweeps across most of the country.

“No significant problems have been caused by the snowfall at this stage,” a spokesperson for the South African Meteorological Service (Saws) told the BBC. The cold weather is expected to continue throughout the week.

Many Johannesburg residents on Monday were pointing anyway enchanted by the rare spectacle of snow in their city.

“The snow was everywhere, covering the fields near our neighborhood – it was really beautiful to see,” a Johannesburg resident told the BBC.

As winter approaches the southern hemisphere nation, forecasters are keeping a close eye on developments. Snow has been reported in several provinces, including the Eastern Cape, Boumalaga and the Gauteng region which includes Johannesburg and Soweto. Forecasters have advised “initiation schools” in the Eastern Cape to take extra care next week as hundreds of teenagers will undergo traditional circumcision ceremonies on isolated hillsides across the province, a practice considered a rite of passage to manhood among the Xhosa ethnic group.
