Instead of the government shedding crocodile tears in front of the consequences of climate change, it has a duty to take concrete political initiatives, said the president of PASOK
Earlier in the morning, the President of PASOK-Movement for Change, Nikos Androulakis, was in the fire-affected areas of the Municipality of Saronikos.
The Mayor of Saronikos Christos Ginis and members of the Civil Protection of the Municipality informed Mr. Androulakis about the damage to houses and the extensive burned forest areas.
In his statements, Mr. Androulakis noted, among other things:
“In a painful way we realize that for another year we are spectators of the same play. Acres of forests, properties, houses are burning all over Greece, but even a few kilometers from the center of Athens.
Therefore, instead of the government shedding crocodile tears in front of the consequences of climate change, it has a duty to take specific political initiatives by strengthening prevention mechanisms – and especially the clearing of forests -, with organizational charts that clarify the responsibilities between local and central government state and, of course, civil protection plans based on best European practices.
We have a duty to protect the quality of life of the Greek people.
I want, for my part, to thank the firefighters and volunteers for the fight they have been giving in the last few hours all over Greece. But also their fellow firefighters from European states, who through the European protection mechanism, came to help”.
The President of PASOK-Movement for Change was accompanied by the Member of Parliament of Attica, Manolis Christodoulakis, the Secretary of the Department of Civil Protection, Michalis Chalaris, and local officials
