Today marks 49 years since the Turkish invasion of July 20, 1974, which caused the territorial mutilation of Cyprus and the ongoing drama of thousands of missing, displaced and trapped people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says in a statement.

“Greece bows to the memory of the fallen brothers and expresses its respect and gratitude to all Cypriots and Greeks who bravely defended Megalonisos.

Almost half a century later, the Cypriot still remains an international issue of illegal invasion and occupationin violation of the fundamental principles of the Charter of the United Nations, as is the case with the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine for a year and a half.

For Greece, the resolution of the Cyprus issue is a top national priority. In coordination with the Republic of Cyprus, we work systematically to create the conditions that will allow finding a fair, sustainable, functional and mutually acceptable solution.

A solution, which will take into account the status of Cyprus as a member state of the European Union and will free it from the anachronistic system of guarantees and invasive rights. A Bizonal, Bicommunal Federation solution. No attempt to create fait accompli on the ground will be accepted and there can be no discussion of a “two-state” scenario.

In the just struggle of Cypriot Hellenism, Greece will always and consistently be a helper and supporter.
