“The new highways are changing Western Greece”, emphasized, among others, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Staikouras, after the successive visits he made today to the construction sites of two major road projects in Achaia and Aetoloakarnania, accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, responsible for Transport, Christina Alexopoulou and the Secretary General of Infrastructure, Maria – Elli Gerar i.e.

In particular, as noted by Christos Staikouras in statements he made, “we had the opportunity to visit two of the emblematic projects that we presented during the reading of the programming statements and we were at the construction sites of the Aktiou-Amvrakia highway, as well as the “Olympia Road” in the Patras-Pyrgos section, in the Kaminia area”.

“With the construction”, he continued, “of the new modern highways, the road map of Western Greece changes, which acquires an important development sign, for the benefit of local societies, but also of the national economy”, adding: “With efficiency, planning and hard work, we speed up and immediately implement the major projects of our country, while putting the safety of our fellow citizens as a top priority”.

During his visit to the construction site of “Olympia Road”, in Patron-Pyrgos, in the Kaminia region of Achaia, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport was informed about the progress of the project and inspected the works being carried out.

As Christos Staikouras said, “it is a long-suffering project, 50 kilometers long, the construction of which began in 2022 and with today’s data is expected to be completed in its entirety in the first half of 2025”, adding: “Already, more than 20% has been implemented, while the rates of its execution are increasing. With this new road axis, the distance between Athens-Patra-Pyrgos is substantially reduced and, most importantly, the safety of citizens passing through it is significantly enhanced. We continue the implementation of projects in terms of economic efficiency and social reciprocity, for the benefit of Greek society and economy”.

For her part, the Deputy Minister of Transport, Christina Alexopoulou, said, among other things, in her statements:

“It is a project that, first of all, brings road safety to the whole of Western Greece, development, investments, it is about 20% of its implementation and very soon it will be delivered to traffic. It is a project that the whole of Western Greece has been waiting for years and some people are responsible for it. But, as of 2022, it’s actually being built. It’s really the construction sites. It’s really the machines. They are real workers who work here, because every technical project is very important for the construction industry as well. The government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis is implementing a life-saving project that will change the image of Western Greece.”

Earlier, Christos Staikouras inspected the construction works of the Aktio-Ambrakia highway, upon completion of which the “Ionian Road” will be connected with the Aktio undersea tunnel, significantly facilitating access to Lefkada, Preveza and Vonitsa.

Indeed, on the occasion of the progress of the works, Christos Staikouras noted: “The travel time from Athens to Preveza and Lefkada is reduced by at least 45 minutes. We ensure the acceleration of movements, but above all the road safety of citizens. The last section of the overall project, 49 kilometers long, is delivered to traffic at the end of November 2023. The bypass of Amfilochia has already been completed, well ahead of schedule. At the moment, the works on the remaining 16 kilometers are in full progress and the last section Paliabela – Drymos is being built. This is an infrastructure project that will significantly revitalize the area, for the benefit of the local society and economy, but mainly for the benefit of the whole of Western Greece”.

It is noted that the two major road projects are implemented with co-financing from the NSRF, as well as national resources.
