The announcement of the chairman of the committee on foreign relations of the Senate, Robert Menendez

“49 years since Turkey’s invasion of the Republic of Cyprus, the continued occupation of the northern part of the Republic remains an affront to International Law, countless United Nations resolutions and the Cypriot people. Turkey’s attack forced thousands of people from their homes and many are still missing to this day.

I unequivocally condemn Turkey’s continued aggressive and antagonistic behavior, including the provocative action in Famagusta. President Erdogan must immediately withdraw more than 40,000 troops from the territory of the (Cypriot) Republic and allow the reunification of Cyprus.

I reaffirm my commitment to the sovereignty, territorial integrity of Cyprus and to a one-state solution based on a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation. I also reaffirm my commitment to its defense and will continue to promote legislation to develop our military ties.

Congress has made clear through the Eastern Mediterranean Security and Energy Cooperation Act that the United States and Cyprus remain strong friends and partners.”
